It was revealed a few episodes into the series that Nick had tragically lost his wife and young daughter in a car accident a few years ago. He stated that this is the reason he joined the traffic division. He was portrayed as a light hearted but short tempered man with a troubled past. Season 1, 1994, was a rather quiet year for him though. He was good mates with everyone at the station.
1995 was more eventful for Nick. The Traffic division on Mount Thomas was closed down, and Nick moved into the police residence, and became the watch-house keeper. He began a relationship with widow, Sasha Peters. The relationship only lasted a few months though. He had several personality clashes with Wayne. The first one was over a pursuit which wasn't terminated when it was supposed to be and the second was over Wayne's mate who ran over a 13 year old girl while driving under the influence. Nick also conducted an intervention on Tom's younger daughter, Susan, who had become mixed up in a cult.
Early in 1996, Nick was accused of killing a child killer who was being held in custody. His colleagues were suspicious because of his hatred of that type of criminal - Whenever a young girl was killed it brought back painful memories of his daughter. When Wayne died, Nick was furious because he was not allowed to attend his funeral because of Wayne's parents wishes. He took his anger out on Wayne's ex-wife, Roz, who delivered the news of the Patterson's resentfulness of the Police force. He also started developing a friendship with Doctor Zoe Hamilton.
In what was a quiet year for Nick, he continued to develop his relationship with Doctor Hamilton. However, in another event that reminded him of his dead daughter, Nick tried to save the lives of two young girls with the help of Adam in flooding rain. Nick was trying to stop a girl from being flushed down a drain pipe by holding on to her arm. He instructed Adam to go and radio in to get help but when Adam ran back to the car, the road it was on had been washed away, with another young girl inside. While Adam was trying to get to the young girl in the car, Nick thought Adam had abandoned him.
Nick begun a relationship with Zoe Hamilton. He proposed to her early in the season but his proposal was rejected. In 1998 Mount Thomas Station was upgraded resulting in Nick getting promoted to Sergeant. However, due to Tom's experience at being the Sergeant (Tom was now Senior Sergeant) Nick started to get frustrated that Tom wasn't letting him do his job as sergeant and even considered a transfer. He followed PJ's advice though and reconsidered the transfer. Late in the year he proposed to Zoe again, this time successfully. The two were married in a Mount Thomas park and they both left after the wedding for Melbourne, with Nick getting a posting at Footscray Police station.
